When we understand how those pieces work together, we can teach them deliberately and let student writing guide what comes next.
This series uses Sedita's Writing Rope as one lens for both teaching writing and assessing it.
Part 1: What Makes Writing So Complex, and the Moves With the Highest Return. Participants explore the strands that make up skilled writing and the instructional moves that carry the greatest return at each one, from the sentence through extended pieces. Grade-band groups see how expectations grow from grade 2 to grade 8, and every strategy is designed to travel into science, social studies, and math. Between sessions, participants try one strategy with students and bring the resulting writing to Part 2.
