Part I:
Ruby Payne is a respected expert in child development and behavioral management. In her book Emotional Poverty How to Reduce Anger, Anxiety, and Violence in the Classroom- she expounds on the importance of understanding why, as opposed to judging and stereotyping students. Her insights provide valuable tools for educators to practice in our schools. This course is fashioned to assist teachers in behaviorally and psychologically understanding our most challenging question, WHY?
The purpose of this course is to identify tools and strategies that promote classrooms and campuses with less anger, anxiety, avoidance, and violence. The major objectives on Day 1 are to; Name emotional realities in the classroom; Share tools to address student anger, anxiety, resentment, avoidance, relationship building, and behavior, Separate discipline strategies from interventions that build motivation in students.
During this presentation we will provide concrete strategies to address many emotional issues and provide conceptual shifts for educators. Specific topics addressed during this session will be Basics about Emotions, The Brain and its regulation and integration, Hand Model of the Brain, The Physiology of Negative Emotions, Emotional Meltdowns, Calming Techniques, Self-Construction, Inherited Tendencies, Stages of Development, and Getting Stuck.
